Intermediate Camp B - Dean's Letter

Dear Intermediate B Campers (and their parents),

I’m writing to let you all know how excited we (your Dean, Chaplain and Teacher) are that Camp is right around the corner!  We are looking forward to getting to know you and to the opportunities to play, learn and grow with you.  Here’s a little about each of us so that you can know us better:
Dean: Rev. Matt Wise
Matt has been the Associate Rector at Church of Reconciliation in San Antonio for three years.  He grew up in the Diocese of West Texas and went to Camp Capers from the time he was 9 until he was the Music Director in 2000 and 2001.  Matt was the Dean for Intermediate B last summer.
Chaplain: Rev. Sean Maloney
Sean is the Rector at St. Bartholomew’s in Corpus Christi.  Sean and his wife, Jess, came from the Diocese of Northern Indiana after seminary (he and Matt were classmates) three years ago.  Sean was a chaplain at Camp last summer.  Sean and Jess have 4 dogs and just bought a new motorcycle.
Teacher:  Cathy Villani
Cathy has been the Christian Education Director at St. Thomas in San Antonio for several years and she and her husband, Gary, and their daughters are members there.  She was a teacher at Camp last summer and again for Midwinter this year, and has lots of camp experience through her daughters, who have been campers and counselors at Camp for many years.
Cathy and Sean and I are hard at work finalizing our teaching plans and we’re really excited about our main teaching theme, but we want some of it to be a surprise for you.  We hope the following is enough information to satisfy you for now.
We will be using the Diocesan theme from the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13.1-9) – “A sower goes out to sow”, drawing from both Old Testament and New Testament scriptures and discussing how we can find ourselves in these stories and find these stories within our own lives.  There are a few main topics we’ll hit on during our teaching and chapel times, and I invite you to read the parable with your parents and then talk with them about these ideas before you come to camp:

What kind of story is a “parable”?
Why do you think Jesus uses parables to teach his followers?
What does your family know about sowing or planting?
Have there ever been any farmers in your family?
How do plants grow?
What kind of work is involved in planting, growing, and harvesting plants?
We hope you’re as excited as we are to get to spend a week together in that amazing, holy place we call Camp Capers.  Camp starts with check-in at 4:00pm sharp on Sunday, July 31 and concludes with a worship service we call “Closing” that begins at 10:00am on Saturday, August 6th.  All parents and family members are invited and encouraged to come to Closing that Saturday.

We’ll see you soon!

Blessings,

Matt, Sean and Cathy
